A distinctive, finely balanced and long-term classic wine whose heady, violet-like scents of red flowers, cassis, mulberries and blood plums are handsomely backed by fresh chocolate/vanilla oak, a hint of dark olive and dusty notes of dried herbs. It’s full-bodied and full-flavoured, with a long, palate-staining presence of dark berries and plums tightly knit with fresh cedary oak and supported by genuinely firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing with finely balanced and mouthwatering acids. Drink: 2033-2043; Rating 95 Points; Jeremy Oliver
Blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, aniseed and vanilla nougat. Medium bodied, fresh and bright, and has what you might call a ‘high tensile’ feel, kind of like a wire pulled very tight, the way it runs through the mouth. Iron. Steel. Tannin is assertive, but not uncompromising, and the way it surges through the finish line is both athletic, and impressive. It’s not as easy to love as the Malbec or Cabernet Malbec, but the quality is equally high. Less flesh, more bone structure. A wine for aesthetes, perhaps. Age will most certainly not weary it. As it takes the air in the glass, it fills out and flexes most impressively. Tasted: Jul 18; Alcohol: 13.5%; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2024-209; Rated: 96+ Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
