Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley to the Limestone Coast (SA) and Heathcote (VIC). Headed up by fourth generation family member Bruce Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.
Deep red/purple colour, still youthful and fresh, the bouquet is gloriously complex and multi-faceted, loaded with smoky coal-dust, earthy, graphite nuances overlying liquorice, dark cherry and dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied and quite powerful, bigger than normal for Tyrrell’s, with abundant tannins that are in harmony with the rest of the wine. An enormously impressive wine which is starting to drink superbly and has many years ahead of it. A smashing Shiraz. Date Tasted: Oct 2020; Price: $160.00; Drink: 2020-2044; Rating 99 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
A brooding nose, deep inky iodine-like notes as well as dark cherry, plum and redder berries, this is a statement of purity and concentration, really impressive craftsmanship too. The palate has a silky and luscious feel, beautifully realised tannins, velvety, even and flawless, a core of sweet red plum flavor and a long, pure fruit finish. Masterful wine. Drink now and for 15+ years. The 2014 Hunter Shiraz wines are of immense importance. Rating: 98 Points; James Suckling
