The Wanderer is made by Andrew Marks who is based at his family vineyard, Gembrook Hill, in the Upper Yarra Valley.
Single vineyard wine from Yellingbo in the Upper Yarra. MV6, on heavy grey clay on a north east facing slope. 100% destemmed. Cold soak and fermentation in open fermenters. No yeast added. Hand plunged. Large format seasoned oak with 11 months on lees. No fining or filtration. Estate bottled.
Grown in Yellingbo at 200m elevation in the Upper Yarra Valley. Fully destemmed. No new oak. A light, bright crimson. Here you'll find aromas of cherries and redcurrants together with some fennel fronds and a touch of graphite adding complexity to the wine. Compact, pure fruited and very nicely structured. Piquant and refreshing. An appealing wine that can be enjoyed now and over the next 6–8 years. Date: Jan 2025; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $38.00; Drink by: 2032; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
This is such a lovely Pinot Noir to kick back and drink. It does all of the pinot noir things, throwing leaf matter and undergrowth into cherries and cranberries, and while you’d generally describe it as lively it also has a settled at-home feeling. It doesn’t feel rushed or pushed. It feels polished. Poised is the word I’m looking for. Date: Aug 2024; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $40; Closure: Diam; Drink: 2024-2030; Rated: 93 Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
