Punch Close Planted Yarra Pinot Noir 2019
Planted in 1989, this tiny 0.25ha vineyard houses the oldest close-planted pinot vines in the Yarra Valley. 30% whole bunches, 17 days on skins. Matured 13 months in barrel, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. A very bright, medium, crimson red. Lifted and aromatic with exotic forest-floor fruits, ferrous notes, pomegranate and whole-bunch-derived dried herbs and fennel seeds. The equally impressive palate is concentrated, layered and effortless. This is a pleasure to drink, even now. Ripe, fine and persistent tannins make for a wine that will provide years of enjoyment, but you will need to be quick: only 80 dozen were made. Drink to: 2037; Price: $80.00; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 96 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion

Thousand Candles Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021
Whole bunches (50%), gentle handling with no pumpovers or plunging. Matured in seasoned French barriques. Excellent wines from Thousand Candles in 2021, thoroughly deserving of the Best Small Producer trophy they picked up at the 2022 Yarra Valley Wine Show. A bright crimson red. A gently textured wine that was made with respect for the fruit with real persistence and finesse. There's lovely purity to the aromas of red cherries, small, wild strawberries, violets and spice. The whole bunches are barely perceptible, and velvety, quite firm and persistent tannins are in complete harmony with the wine, too. Date: Jan 2023; Alcohol: 13%; Price: $65.00; Drink by: 2028; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
