Ordinarily, we would be fortunate enough to feature two or three 97 Point rated Pinots each year, especially given that on almost all occasions, said wines are made in miniscule amounts, almost always a few hundred cases at best and almost always they aren't cheap. What we have here is a new StarDozen featuring 3 bottles each from 4 renowned producers. All wines rating 97 Points and all significantly below their retail price. This is a rare and extremely limited opportunity.
The StarDozen consists of the following:
3 bottles Bream Creek Tasmania Pinot Noir 2023
3 bottles Mulline Sutherlands Creek Pinot Noir 2022
3 bottles Giant Steps Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022
3 bottles Coldstream Hills Reserve Pinot Noir 2022

Mulline Sutherlands Creek Pinot Noir 2022
A single-vineyard wine from the Strathmore vineyard, planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late 1990s. Matured in 30% new puncheons and barriques. A bright cherry red. The most perfumed of this year's single vineyard pinots from Mulline. It will also be the most long-lived. Delicate with aromas of wild strawberry, redcurrant, pomegranate, peony and a hint of dried herbs. Equally detailed on the elegant, fine-boned and long palate. In the words of the late English wine critic Clive Coates, very fine indeed! Date: January 2023; Alcohol: 12.5%; Price: $60; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2024-2028; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
Giant Steps Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022
From Lou Primavera's 2001-planted vineyard at Woori Yallock; 25% whole bunches on the clone 115 component, while clones MV6 and G were destemmed. Matured in French barriques (25% new). Wonderfully perfumed and vibrant with its aromas of cranberries, wild strawberries, a little Sichuan pepper, fresh citrus oil and musk roses at dusk. A wine of exquisite finesse and excellent depth, the tannins are very fine and long, as is the finish. This will provide much enjoyment over the next decade or so. Date: Feb 2023; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $90.00; Drink by: 2032; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
Coldstream Hills Reserve Pinot Noir 2022
All estate fruit, including the Amphitheatre A and G blocks; 15% whole bunches and matured in French barriques (57% new). A bright, deep-ish crimson. With its aromas of black cherries, violets, brown spices and a touch of freshly hung meat, there's lots going on in this compelling wine. The palate is brooding and structured and while you'd no doubt enjoy this now with some food, the best is at least four to six years away, if not longer. Worth every cent. Date: Dec 2023; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $85.00; Drink by: 2035; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
