The Agricultural Company Giovanni Sordo is in the heart of the well-known Barolo region, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto - just a few kilometers away from Alba, in the province of Cuneo. It is a family run winery, now in the hands of Giorgio - Giovanni's son - the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century. The estate was founded in 1912 by the great-father Joseph, but the real turnover came with His son John who - together with His Wife Mary, the real witness of the family's story - bought several vineyards of Nebbiolo for Barolo - the Sorì in Piedmontese language - among the best in the Barolo wine district.
The Rocche of Castiglione Vineyard is located in one of the best vineyard terrains in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto.
The colour is a splendid mixture of ruby red and garnet which boasts an amazing brilliance when in the glass. Its alcohol content is expressed through the evident tears which linger into the glass. Rocche di Castiglione surprises with its intense and rich bouquet. The features of this Barolo are brought to the fore by its clean and elegant sensations – recalling mature black cherry, blue berry and peach conserve. Floral nuances, alpine hay, liquorice and tobacco notes come up with aging. Notes of berries and noble wood complete the nose. In the mouth the wine starts off warm then shows all its complexity – this thanks to the powerful but smooth tannins; the result is a wine with a great aging potential.
From Castiglione Falletto. Liqueur-cherry aromas, ripe and sweet to sniff. Very appealing range of perfumes. A big, bold, massive wine with generous tannins that coat the entire interior of the mouth. Very concentrated and powerful, with lashings of tannins that are well-integrated. An almost opulent Barolo, if that's possible. Wonderful wine. Drink: 2019 to 2034; Price: $125.00; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 97 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
Dark raspberry, sweet soil, baking spices, succulent fruit, powerful, black tea and perfume, so long it echoes. Subdued earthiness and crushed rock. Presence. Character. Outstanding. Tasted: Sept 19; Price: $125; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2021-2036; Rated: 96 or 97 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
