The Agricultural Company Giovanni Sordo is in the heart of the well-known Barolo region, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto - just a few kilometers away from Alba, in the province of Cuneo. It is a family run winery, now in the hands of Giorgio - Giovanni's son - the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century. The estate was founded in 1912 by the great-father Joseph, but the real turnover came with His son John who - together with His Wife Mary, the real witness of the family's story - bought several vineyards of Nebbiolo for Barolo - the Sorì in Piedmontese language - among the best in the Barolo wine district.
Monprivato is one of the most prestigious wine ever, not only in the area of Castiglione Falletto, but in the whole Barolo wine district because of its amazing soil.
The colour of this wine surprises for the intensity of the shades of garnets and rubies, and the brilliance is emphasized when into the glass. Its potent alcohol content is given by the formation of abundant tears. The different flavours of Nebbiolo grapes are drawn on the fore by its rich and lingering bouquet, amplified by the elegant sensations of black cherry, blueberry, peach conserve and floral nuances. With aging this wine develops tertiary notes of liquorice, tobacco, noble woods and delicate forest floor. As times goes by, ethereal sensations come up with hints of resin and sweet spices. Warm and round in the mouth at first, it then shows a wonderful complexity. The flavour is full, well-structured with evident acidity and tannins that evolve and find their balance with aging. This is an amazing full-body wine with a great aging potential.
Black raspberry, new leather / tobacco, deep, floral, fresh red fruits, vibrant, deep bedded mineral/graphite tannin, pure sweet fruit, long and mineral tannin to close. Ripe and fullsome for a Monprivato. Beauty. Tasted: Feb 2020; Rated: 95 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
Compelling aroma. Took me in. Sanguine, cherry, rose petal, dried herbs, choc-liqourice. Powerful, concentrated palate, feels big, muscular, rippling on waves of dark berry fruits and smoky fog of tannins. Dense wine, assertive and strong. Sweeter fruit met by thunk of pulverised rock pucker. Stand back a while. Tasted: Feb 2020; Rated: 94 Points; Mike Bennie; The Wine Front
Other selections made on the same order will be dispatched together in late April.
