In 1850, 12 miles north east of Penola, Mr John Smith established a sheep station and called the site Comaum. By 1888, with the arrival of more families to the area, Comaum School was opened. Our premium Coonawarra vineyard is situated on the original school house site, and each year a special wine is released in its honour.
An abundance of purple and black fruits, with concentrated notes of dark cherry, bay leaf and dark chocolate. Vibrant fruit supported by elegant tannins and subtle toasted oak create a seamless, layered wine with depth.
A very fine Shiraz from Coonawarra, from an excellent vintage. The nose reveals notes of cassis, chocolate, mint, tobacco leaves and black fruits. The quality of the vintage shines through and we see some early complexity already evident. The oak is handled deftly and is superbly integrated. Seamless in structure with really fine tannins and serious length, this is a cracker and will drink beautifully for ten years or more. There's a flow to this wine, an impression of fluid control. You might even call it smooth. It tastes of sweet red berries, plums and redcurrant, with smoked clove notes, mint and cedarwood. Oak is lavishly applied but the fruit is up to it. Everything here feels substantial but at no point does it feel overdone. Drink to: 2035; Date Tasted: January 2023; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 93 Points; Campbell Mattinson; James Halliday Wine Companion
The bouquet shows striking blackberry and raspberry characters with floral, warm spice and toasty oak nuances. The seductively delicious palate offers plump mouthfeel and velvety texture, combined with opulent fruit flavours and elegant savoury notes, making it instantly satisfying. Tasted: April 2022; At its best: 2023 to 2036; Price: $70.00; Rating: 95 Points; Wine Orbit
