The dictionary definition of ‘Riposte’ (pronounced rip-posst) is comeback, reply, retort, or in the context of the sport of fencing a quick counter stroke. After over a decade of confusion about his name ‘Riposte’ was chosen as an appropriate name for a ‘comeback label’ by Tim Knappstein.

Riposte is the family brand of Tim Knappstein and Son, based in the Adelaide Hills district of Lenswood after Tim’s earlier years forging an admirable reputation in the Clare Valley. This Chardonnay is single vineyard sourced out of the Kenton Creek district, going straight to press as mostly whole berries before fermentation (50% wild) in French barriques (25% new), where the yeast lees remained for around 8 months. All contemporary, cool climate winemaking skills enabling a Hills Chardonnay stamp in freshly cut white nectarine aromas and flavours, a creamy feel in the tasting, subtle citrus underlay and deft handling of oak offering texture and balanced richness without woody interference. This is elegantly styled and expressed with Gala apple, green rockmelon, lemon peel and nougat characters on the nose. Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, fermentation is usually in French oak barriques with a percentage new. A portion of the juice is fermented with wild yeasts. The colour here is a deep yellow. This is an elegant style of Chardy with a deftly handled use of oak – very gentle. The nose exhibits notes of cashews, peaches, river stones with a hint of stone fruits and beeswax. There is good concentration and direction as the backing has a slight chalky note. Enjoy any time from now for the next four to five years. Rating: 92 Points; Ken Gargett
