Planted in 1999, established by brothers Brian & Kevyn Joy, and currently operated day to day by Graeme Miles in the Vineyard, and Leighton Joy in the winery. Pyren is planted to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The house style is to meld the expression of very high quality fruit with integrity and artistic freedom. The endeavour to fine tune the best style for Pyren's fruit is a continuous one that knows no bounds.
There's an elegance to this release that has to be applauded. It's a shiraz that feels modern. It's driven by cherry-plum flavours with smoked cedar and mint top notes, but as it breathes it gets meatier, juicier and more complex, with roasted nut and woodsy spice notes in the mix too. It's in a good place now, but it's on its way to somewhere better. The laciness of the tannin is a particular highlight.
