Pirramimma was founded by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892 and has been owned and operated by the Johnston family ever since. Winemaking at Pirramimma has been a family affair for over 126 years and is now in the capable hands of Geoff Johnston, a winemaking graduate of Charles Sturt University, grandson of the winery’s founder.
The bouquet displays spicy red plum, mulberry, bramble and subtle cedary oak, with hints of coconut and vanilla. The palate shows distinctive regional flavours of cranberry, Kirsch cherry, wild loganberries, black plum and toasted Mocha oak, complemented by spice and savoury notes.

Combining opulence with robust structure, the wine shows dark and purple fruit richness with toasted spice, vanillin oak and floral aromas on the nose, followed by a superbly weighted palate that’s velvety and gloriously flavoursome. A substantial offering filled with delectable flavours. At its best: 2023 to 2039. Date: June 2021; Price: $70.00; Rating: 96 Points; Sam Kim; Wine Orbit
This is the epitome of the old adage ‘An iron fist in a velvet glove’. Dark and opaque in the glass. Brooding aromas of plums, panforte, graphite and vanilla. Full, rich and layered on the palate, dark fruits, dates, sweet spice, there’s a generosity and roundness of flavour, but the tannins provide firmness and structure and ensure the lush fruit behaves itself. A powerfully built, rich and structured wine. Drink: 2021 to 2036; Price: $70.00; Rating: 95 Points; Aaron Brasher; The Real Review
Dense, inky shiraz with an almost syrupy texture. Red-fleshed plum, cassis, dried berry, wood-smoke, mixed spice, chocolate-mocha, liquorice, vanilla and nutty oak flavours. Amazing concentration—almost too much. Drink: 2021 to 2039; Price: $70.00; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 95 Points; Bob Campbell MW; The Real Review
'And the hits just keep coming’ with another terrific McLaren Vale shiraz. The combination of a concentrated but quality vintage and those low trellises, from a contoured vineyard, resulted in minimal yield, under two tonnes per acre. This is a wine that could easily be enjoyed tonight, but will also reward extended cellaring. Don’t be afraid to give this ten to twenty years. Drink to: 2021-2029; Price: $70.00; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 94 Points; Ken Gargett
