Petaluma, founded in 1976, crafts ultra-premium wines by carefully selecting the best sites within a particular region suited to a chosen variety. This is our 'distinguished vineyards' philosophy. This pioneering attitude towards responsive and instinctive viticulture and winemaking is as uncompromising and true today as it was more than 35 years ago.
The well known Coonawarra region produces elegant and long lived Cabernet and Merlot wines. To create this Coonawarra blend that is now an iconic Australian red wine and one of the benchmarks for the region, Petaluma employs hand pruning and hand picking coupled with minimal irrigation and low yields.
76% cabernet, 20% merlot, 4% shiraz, matured in Dargaud and Jaegle French oak, as it has been since day one. A finely detailed portrait of Coonawarra cabernet framed by the contribution of the merlot and (a little) shiraz. It is only medium-bodied, but its precision and length are utterly convincing, helped no doubt by the great vintage. A perennial classic, for a long time this wine was just labelled as Coonawarra, an indication of a wine that had the class and quality to take a leaf out of the french book, labelling the wine based on the region and giving consumers a fair chance at guessing the variety based on the principle grape varieties of the region. An impenetrable red in the glass, the nose gives a pure expression of blackcurrant with oak induced spice and touches of cigar box in the mix. This wine is made to last, the palate gives tight grain tannin and drying dark fruits that are lifted by dark chocolate, aniseed and understated mint. There is commanding length to finish, with this wine having all the hallmarks to become a classic release. Drink by: 2030; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 96 Points; Patrick Eckel; The Wine Reviewer
