Since its establishment in August 1969, Mitchelton has an uncompromising commitment to viticulture and winemaking in developing an intimate understanding of the unique climate and soils that are intrinsic to our distinguished Central Victorian vineyards.
Hand-picked fruit from 25yo vines at Toolleen, crushed and destemmed with some whole berries included. Open ferment with cultured yeast, 18 days on skins, pressed direct to barrel, for mlf and 18 months' maturation in French oak barriques (40% new). The progression from Nagambie Lakes to Heathcote 'next door' was a natural one for the Ryan family. Winemaker, Andrew Santarossa captures the richness and intrigue of the region's No. 1 grape very well, pursuing a plush, modern, oak-driven style requiring extensive time in bottle. Dark berries, plum cake, aniseed, dark chocolate panforte and savoury, spicy oak, with firm tannins. Looking a treat now and still a long way to go. Drink to: 2031; Price: $45.00; Date Tasted: January 2021; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 95 Points & Special Value Star; Jeni Port; James Halliday Wine Companion
