Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district.
In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, Leeuwin Estate is now under the direction of two generations of the founding family.
Prelude Vineyards wines are made from fruit producing the most readily expressive wines, with the objective that they will drink well soon after release. Whilst still retaining ageing potential they impart typical Margaret River impact and character. The Prelude label celebrates Leeuwin’s association with the musical arts through the staging of the annual Leeuwin Concert Series.
It’s the best Prelude I can remember tasting, I’ll say that much straight off. A little struck match, very spicy (some pepper and cinnamon), bright citrus and green pear, hazelnut, fine flinty grip, with a cool finish of excellent length. Fine-boned, but delivers just enough flavor. I was so taken by its balance and charm. Superb drinking. Date: May 2024; Alcohol: 13%; Price: $45; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2024-2030+; Rated: 95 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
