The Kooyong vineyard and winery, established in 1996, was acquired by the Gjergja family in 2004. Kooyong is located in Tuerong, towards the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula. The majority of the forty hectare site is planted to Pinot Noir, with a substantial area of Chardonnay and several small sections of Pinot Gris.
All Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate wines are entirely domain grown, vinified and bottled. The wines in the Quartier stable are produced from estate grown fruit and fruit from neighbouring vineyards.
The nose displays vibrant and fragrant fruit aromatics-Meyer lemon peel, fleshy white pear, honeydew melon and rosewater. Lemon and stone fruits dominate the spicy and juicy palate. Excellent length and a well-balanced mouthfeel are matched with crisp citrus acidity. Still tightly wound, the wine will continue to open and flesh out with time.
A never-fail rendition of pinot gris although quite a tight, restrained style this vintage. Plenty of poached, candied and fresh pears all spiced up with ginger and cinnamon. A fine layer of lees adding to some palate weight and a light phenolic pull on the finish. Savoury, moreish and refreshing. Lovely drinking here. Rating: 93 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
