John Hill Wines is a small ultra-premium producer of commemorative wines. Founder Leon Hill – is a direct descendant of John Hill who arrived as the Bosun on HMS Buffalo to participate in the establishment of the colony of South Australia in 1836.

A deep ruby wine with vibrant colour, full of ripe opulent dark plums and forest fruit aromas. An earthy note ties into the rich and complex oak structure. These flavours merge together on the palate and are guided by a generous serve of well-rounded tannins, allowing for the balanced palate to extend into a pleasantly lingering finish.

Such a balanced and poised expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz. Lifted notes of floral red berry, plum and spices with an infusion of dark chocolate and dry earthy nuances. The integration of oak, fruit and tannin is superb, creating a seamless and refined palate. Fine chalky tannins provide plenty of structural support. Drink to: 2025-2043; Price: $230.00; Rating: 96 Points; Ray Jordan

An opaque maroon hue, the structure here is plush and seductive. A seriously sexy style of red. The nose reveals notes of mocha, coffee beans, licorice, black olives, blackcurrants and cassis with oodles of chocolate. The oak integration gives a silky texture. Excellent length, fine balance and a layered style, this is a wonderful McLaren Vale Shiraz, which will provide pleasure for the next twenty years. Drink to: 2025-2045; Price: $230.00; Rating: 96 Points; Ken Gargett
