John Duval is one of the world’s best known winemakers. Toward the end of 2002, John retired from Southcorp after a distinguished career of 28 years, including 16 years as Chief Winemaker for Penfolds. John embarked on the development of his own label in 2003 using old vine Barossa Valley fruit and has created stunning wines that reflect the terroir of the Barossa and the hand crafted attention of John Duval.
The aim with Plexus is express the wide spectrum of red fruit flavours from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre and also provide structure with a seamless balance and long finish. Shiraz 49%, Grenache 35%, Mourvedre 16%. The Shiraz was sourced from old vineyards in the Tanunda, Krondorf and Ebenezer regions, Grenache from the Tanunda and Ebenezer region and Mourvèdre from the Light Pass region.
John Duval launched this excellent label after he left as senior winemaker for Penfolds and Grange 20 or so years ago. It’s a wonderful example of refined Barossa and this blend captures all the generosity, complexity and richness that is Barossa, but with a polish and refinement that is a result of classy winemaking. Date: July 2023; Rating: 95 Points; Ray Jordan's Top 100 Reds 2023
An impressive 49/35/16% shiraz/grenache/mourvèdre (from a 'who's who' of the best subregions in the Barossa Valley) made by ex-Grange winemaker, John Duval. Gorgeously perfumed with red cherry, raspberry and mulberry fruits flecked with floral notes of violets and jasmine with hints of ginger cake, red licorice, earth, cola and crushed stone. There is a lively acid cadence, superfine powdery tannins and an array of gingery spice and red fruit that fans out nicely on the finish. A bargain. Date: Jan 2023; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $40.00; Drink by: 2029; Rating: 94 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
