JaJa Barossa Shiraz 2004 ($29.99) screwcap: Near-perfect expression of Barossan shiraz. Dense, black, silken, overwhelmingly generous and yet laced with fine, steely tannin - this wine ain't about to run away anytime soon. Chocked with black, coal-like, slightly brandied fruit, its mocha-like oak is tucked firmly into the fruit's embrace - this is a very satisfying red wine. It deserves to make a mark as one of the new Barossa reds to look out for - the price, too, is ten dollars per bottle less than it could be. Beautiful. Drink: 2007-2016. 94 points. This is from Stonewell in the sub-region of Marananga. The winemaker is Barossa superstar Troy Kalleske and the executive producers are brothers Pierre and Bert Werden. The name Ja Ja is an acronym derived from the names of their four children - Jake, Andrew, Jordan and Alana. Bert has had another kiddy called Tara since so maybe they should call future releases Ja Ja Ta…which sounds a bit like a cracker and could be wholly appropriate based on the quality of this first release. Aromas of blackberry, plum, raspberry, aniseed and meaty coffee oak with just a suggestion of fresh mint. On the palate full bodied and packed with an array of lush blackberry, dark cherry and raspberry fruit backed with savoury meaty toasty oak. Beautiful ripe textural tannins here. The mouthfeel is outstanding. Finishes long with blackberry/raspberry and toasty espresso flavours. Poke your nose into the glass of this new release and you will be greeted by pure Barossan goodness. It hails from Stonewell in the Marananga sub-region of the Barossa valley and is made by Troy Kalleske for well known Melbourne retailers, Pierre and Bert Werden. The wine conjours up aromas of macerated blackfruits, black cherries and a touch of raspberry lift, with hints of espresso, dark chocolate, fruit-cake spice and mocha oak. Full-bodied on the palate with a densely packed, swathe of juicy, plush fruit…blackberry, black cherry and juicy plum fruits abound with hints of spice, judicious chocolaty oak and a sprig of mint. The texture and weight in the mouth is impressive as is the ‘melt-in-your-mouth’, ripe, tannin structure. A superb value, first up release that is expressive, balanced, fruit packed and long of finish….a wine that over-delivers in every aspect and punches well-above its weight. Excellent. Rich dark red-purple in colour. The nose has very ripe blackberry, plum and mocha. 'Uh oh' I thought a real 'Barossa shiraz' (with a little b). However there are layers there on the nose that bring out more complexity. This complexity is fully demonstrated on the palate. This is a capital B Barossa Shiraz. The fruit from the nose combines with quality oak matched to the level of fruit which fills the mouth, giving great breadth across the palate. Medium firm tannin backbone before a good long finish. This is a quality wine through and through; still very young it well certainly develop in the bottle. This is a great wine, and an excellent way to launch a label, even for my normally Barossa-sensitive palate. Having said that Bert and Pierre have dudded himself here, and let emotion get in the way of their retailing instincts. Instead of a $29.95 RRP they should have made it $50 and sold it on special for $38. Oh well, I guess the kids' names must count for something. The 2004 Shiraz was made by Troy Kalleske. Opaque purple-colored, it exhibits notes of toasty oak, tar, licorice, pepper, blueberry, and blackberry. Youthful, thick, and layered on the palate, it is still tightly wound and the level of tannin suggests that a decade of cellaring is merited. It has a big upside but it is nevertheless a gamble.
