Hoddles Creek Estate was established in 1997 when the D'Anna family decided to establish a vineyard on the property that has been in the family since 1960. The vineyard sits astride Gembrook road and adjacent Hoddles Creek. Its steeply sloping blocks prohibit mechanical harvesting, with both vineyards being hand pruned and harvested. All wines are single vineyard and estate grown.
Red berries and dark cherry dominate the nose, firm mid palate tannins lead to pleasing acidity on the back.
Lovely amount of perfume this year, in with red cherry and other red fruits, some cinnamon, almond, vanilla, and assorted spice from oak, subtle earthiness with a little dried herb too. It’s medium-bodied, kind of light, but gee, there’s no shortage of depth and concentration either. It has bright acidity, fine tannin grip, and a lively finish of excellent length. It took me one smell, and one sip, to know that I really like this vintage. A little more fine-boned. Classic styling, if you will. I could write a tasting note that goes something like this: brightly coloured, there are aromas of small red fruits, gentle spice and some rose petal. And that the light- to medium-bodied and mouth-filling palate finishes with just the right amount of silky tannins. Or, I can simply say that the number one contender for Australia's best value pinot is in no danger of relinquishing the title!
