Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone Varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The House style is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by a combination of low yields, early picking, slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during elevage. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency.
Hand-picked from 80-year-old Krondorf and 163-year-old Springton vines; foot-trodden, hand-plunged, matured in large-format oak. The bouquet is fragrant, with exotic spices showing the way, the palate juicy, laden with purple fruits. Silky tannins simply add to the flavour. Date: Nov 2023; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $40.00; Drink by: 2029; Rating: 96 Points & Top 100 Wines for 2023; James Halliday Wine Companion
Raspberry, cherry, almond, a little spice, dried rose perfume, incense and aniseed. It's medium-bodied, fresh and red fruited, distinctly nutty with hazelnut and almond, lovely fine crunch to acidity, dense but silky emery board tannin, and a finish of impeccable length. It's a superb expression of old vine Grenache, and so beautifully made. Alcohol: 14.2%; Price: $40.00; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2023-2035+; Rated: 95+ Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
