Gioiello Estate was the chosen name for this family winery, in recognition of past generations of the Schiavello family who worked at a property named Gioiello (‘jewel’ in Italian), perched above a hillside town in Calabria, Italy.
Hand-picked from the Old House Block, destemmed and crushed into open fermenters, matured in French oak for 18 months. This is what I term real merlot, thanks to its savoury mix of fruits, black olive and dried herbs. The handling of the oak and tannins was exemplary. Drink to: 2030; Alcohol: 13.7%; Price: $45.00; Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday; Wine Companion
