The vineyards of Fratelli D'ANNA are located in Tuscany. Limestone rocks, schists, granites and sandstones, the decomposition of which generates the finest minerals, all present in this region. These are precious nutrients, which are absorbed by plants and become responsible for the personality of the wine. Transferred to the grapes, they generate the characteristics that we seek: juiciness, energy, vitality and texture of tannins.
Aged in a mix of cement and old oak from mature vines in Tuscany and made without the use of most modern intervention. This wine has a character and soul that stands out and a personality that reminds me of those óld school'Italy.
Such a cool thing to see a Chianti in this bottling format. You can stick a candle in it when you’ve finished; it’s arguably a better closure than the cork it comes with. It’s a little walnutty and malty, red cherry, some liquorice and dried herbs, almond paste. Medium-bodied, fleshy and quite thick with something of a clay-like feel to tannin, dried herbs and raspberry, modest but balanced acidity, with a silty and savoury finish of good length, black olive, orange peel and dried herb in the aftertaste. It’s very old school but so good to drink. I wasn’t quite sure about it at first, then I kept coming back to it. A lot. One of those wines that drags you into its vortex. Charismatic. Recommended. Date: Mar 2023; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $38; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2025-2029+; Rated: 93 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
