Based on the single vineyard philosophy of winemaking, Craggy Range was the first in the Southern Hemisphere to specialise in the production of single vineyard wines from the most prestigious winegrowing regions across New Zealand including Martinborough, Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough.
Le sol translated from French means ‘the soil’, appropriate when one considers the significant impact the stony soils of our Gimblett Gravels Vineyard have on our wine called "Le Sol". They keep the growth and crop of these old clone Syrah vines in check and provide warmth in the autumn, all critical factors in developing the enormous character and presence this wine has. Traditionally made, heady aromas, luscious yet classical texture. "Le Sol" is all at once luscious, elegant and exuberant – and in a very short time it has shown the breeding of Syrah in the Gimblett Gravels.
Haunting, complex syrah, with layers of flavours that include violet, floral, blackcurrant, dark cherry, black pepper and nutty oak flavours. Approachable now but with obvious cellaring potential. An intense, powerful wine with a lingering finish. Elegance on a grand scale. Date Tasted: April 2022; Drink: 2022 to 2040; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 98 Points; Bob Campbell MW; The Real Review
Deep, concentrated red-purple colour, the bouquet profound, meaty, spicy and dark-berried, a fabulous array of aromas and flavours already showing great charm and detail. The palate is fleshy and beautifully textured, long and svelte, with fine-grained tannins in abundance, harmonious and long, beautifully balanced and loaded with charm. A great wine. Simply breathtaking. Date Tasted: Oct 2022; Drink: 2023 to 2042; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 99 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
