Crabtree is situated in the heart of the historic and iconic Watervale district, the tasting room and courtyard (set in the produce cellar of the original 1850s homestead) looking out over the estate vineyard. The winery was founded in 1984 by Robert Crabtree, who built a considerable reputation for medal-winning riesling, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. In 2007 it was purchased by an independent group of wine enthusiasts, and the winery firmly continues in the tradition of estate-grown premium wines.
This is a very punchy vibrant riesling providing a compelling state of the Watervale region for riesling…if it was ever really needed. It’s loaded with lemon and lemon rind on the nose with some nice floral touches. The palate typically is intense, extending purposefully to a very long finish. Drink: 2023 - 2036; Price: $32.00; Rating: 94 Points; Ray Jordan
The fruit has been sourced from estate vineyards, from vines between two and five decades of age. A delightful and classic example of what Watervale can offer and continues the evolution and improvement we have seen in recent years from this maker. Just the vaguest hint of the palest yellow here. A lovely aromatic Riesling with oodles of limes and florals, spices, and that lovely hint of river stones. Good acidity and a minerally undertow. Excellent length, balance and a clean finish. Delicious now and for the next eight to twelve years. Drink: 2023 - 2035; Price: $32.00; Rating: 93 Points; Ken Gargett
