Clairault Streicker began in 1976 when Ian and Ani Lewis bought 4 hectares and planted their first vines. Resilient and visionary, they worked their vineyard diligently — crafting their first vintage in 1980. For the next 19 years, they developed and expanded the Clairault property to over 68 hectares.
White pear, jasmine, grapefruit and bees wax on the nose. The palate is pure, tense and focused. Pear flesh, zest and porcelain-like tannin drive forward a message of serenity and true fruit expression. A lattice of fine French oak, granite and grapefruit pith serve as a platform for an unyielding finish of white flowers, lemon curd and hints of gun-smoke.
True to form, this is in the richer, riper spectrum from fruit-to-winemaking inputs. Yet everything is well-knitted and complete. Stone fruit, grapefruit, and lemon zest with creamy, cashew-like lees bolster the palate as does the slinky, attractive oak. The lemon-saline flavour and talc-like texture of the acidity are a bonus that corrals all that flavour. Drink to: 2030; Price: $50.00; Date Tasted: January 2023; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 95 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
A highly scented and fragrant chardonnay that comes from select blocks on the estate. Aromas of pear and grapefruit with just a faint edge of lemon zest. The palate is finely designed with a precise linear minerality and chalky limestone balance. Just a little struck match adds the final flourish to a very good wine. Drink: 2024 - 2032; Price: $50.00; Rating: 95 Points; Ray Jordan
