Château de Chamirey overlooks the village of Chamirey and was built in the 18th century. An elegant château influenced by the Italian architecture, looking down on a French garden. Built on a rocky headland, Château de Chamirey has a unqiue position on Mercurey vineyards. Nowadays, the Domaine is owned and run by Amaury et Aurore Devillard who represent the 5th generation of winemaking in Burgundy within this family. In 1934, their grand-father, Marquis de Jouennes decided to bottle the wines of Château de Chamirey at the Domaine. His son-in-law, Bertrand Devillard carried on his work and has extended the holdings of Domaine in the best terroirs of Mercurey, to reach its present size of 95 acres.
Produced from three parcels that total 2ha at the northern edge of the premier cru band, exposed to the east and south. Fermented with 10% whole clusters that receive a cold soak, then a fermentation of two weeks with punching down prior to ageing in cask (25% new). The result has a bright, concentrated raspberry fruit and tannins that are silky but pleasantly firm. Rating: 92 Points; Charles Curtis; Decanter Magazine
This is very ripe as well and here too there are wisps of menthol and a certain alcohol whiff on the equally liqueur-like nose. There is impressive volume and mid-palate density to the middle weight flavors that also coat the palate thanks to the abundant dry extract that also buffers the moderately firm tannic spine shaping the notably warm finish. This is one of those wines that is well-made in its style but with that said, I emphasize that it will most please those who enjoy very ripe red burgundy.
