Camille Cayran is a wine cooperative in Cairanne representing 80 small winegrowers since more than 80 years. The wines produced, include several of the major appellations in southern Côtes-du-Rhône, such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Cairanne.
A fascinating blend from a single vineyard near Mont Ventoux in the Rhone’s Vaucluse department. Half Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Carignan, the last of these fortuitously maintained as a treasured variety by the grower. The wine has genuine regional garrigue aromas of earth, crumbling rock walls and dried herbs, followed by a mostly crimson cherry flavour profile with obvious anise and pepper-like spice traits. While ripe and juicy, it’s fresh and energised as well. Easy drinking imbued with distinctive terroir character. Price: $50.00; Rating: 92 Points; Tony Love
A most appealing Rhone blend of Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. Dark fruits with a lush chocolate richness and a slightly earthy minerality. It’s a generous wine with fine supple tannins and lightly applied oak combining with the soft fruit textures. Spicy cherry nuances complete a tidy wine for the next few years. Drink to: 2025-2030; Price: $50.00; Rating: 92 Points; Ray Jordan
This is a high quality Côtes du Rhône Villages, drinking well above its weight. This is Grenache dominant, a blood red/maroon hue, and is quite a savoury style. Notes of warm earth, leather, miso, cloves and dark cherries. If your experience with Côtes du Rhône Villages has been limited to bog average wines, I assure you that you are not on your own but persevere and give this a try. A revelation. The wine is balanced and lingers beautifully. Drink to: 2025-2031; Price: $50.00; Rating: 92 Points; Ken Gargett
