The Burge Family Winemaking tradition first started in the late 1860s with John Burge, who migrated to South Australia from Wiltshire (UK) in 1855. By the turn of the century, production ceased and all equipment was sold by John’s son Meshach, and it wasn’t until 1928 that John’s grandson ‘Percival’ recommenced winemaking.
This wine encapsulates everything that is great about the Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon, with rich berry fruit and a lovely dense palate full of flavour and character. Balanced with subtle use of oak, there are hints of spice and a toasty note. The tannins are fine and the length long. This wine drinks well now or if cellared well will age gracefully for many years.
Barossa Cabernet can be very good. This is very good. The power is delivered with style and control, packing deep and intense Cabernet fruit into a casing of firm tannin and fine grained oak. A little crushed ant character on the nose with a floral leafy Cabernet influence, The palate is quite finely presented with focus and control. Has all you need for extended cellaring. Date Tasted: January 2025; Drink to: 2025-2043; Price: $85.00 Rating: 95 Points; Ray Jordan
