Domaine de Bellene is located in Beaune in buildings steeped in history, dating from the 16th century. The origin of the domain name: "Bellene" comes from the name of the city of Beaune. The 24 hectares of vineyards stretch across many appellations and are all focused on organic farming. Winemaker Nicolas Potel goal is for Bellene to be Burgundy's first outright major organic Domaine.
There is very good color to the exuberantly floral-suffused nose, in particular violet, that is comprised mostly by notes of black cherry and earth that are trimmed in discreet wood influence. There is excellent density and vibrancy to the bigger bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the dusty and bitter chocolate-inflected finish. This well-made effort is very much built to age and I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least 7 to 8 years.
